Diabetes treatment: Can cinnamon lower blood sugar?

Is it true that cinnamon can lower blood sugar in people with diabetes?

Mayo Clinic endocrinologist Maria Collazo-Clavell, M.D., and colleagues answer select questions from readers.
Answer
This is a topic of debate. While some research suggests that cinnamon enhances the effectiveness of insulin, resulting in lower blood sugar levels, other research contradicts this conclusion.

A 2006 study found that cinnamon extract has a moderate effect in reducing blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. However, another study published in 2006 concluded that cinnamon supplements don’t improve blood sugar control in postmenopausal women.

More research would be needed to determine what role cinnamon may play in the treatment of diabetes.

a recent study found that cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar, however the results were slight and temporary. there’s a link to the article in sources.

I have heard of this recommendation. I don’t believe it would work for everyone, but also probably depends upon the amount you’re using. They do have cinnamon tablets at places like Walmart or other pharmacies, over the counter.

Yes it is. It will help ‘regulate’ your blood-sugar levels, but not if you abuse your sugar intake. You still need to be responsible for that…

it is believed that cinnamon has a certain level of sensitivity on the insulin produced in our bodies which in fact is proven helpful in maintaining a diabetics blood sugar/pressure

All these herbs like cinnamon ,Tulsi,Bittergaurd etc are helpful & they lower blood sugar but in very small amount & that is not much helpful in a diabetic pt ,they have to take regular medicines . They can be taken as additional help but not as main tretment line.

Cinnamon has no real effect on blood sugars. The most it does it helps with insulin sensitivity and can help stop the high rises you can get from eating food. Kind of like how glucerna prducts work, instead of getting a high peak after eating it will help to level out the peak, cause people to think that it actually effects blood sugars. the only thing that effects blood sugars directly are Insulin and food.

I had heard this and my husband tried it for awhile and we didn’t really see any difference. Maybe it works better for type 2 instead of type 1. I had heard walnuts also help so I started eating an ounce or two of them each day and that actually did help me (type 2). You can also try chromium picolinate tablets.

It does seem to help, esp. taken right after a meal (not so much lower as balance your blood sugar – helps it to not spike as high). However, my endocrinologist mentioned that once your blood sugar gets TOO high, it really has no effect. Try it – it’s tasty and certainly cannot hurt!

studies have shown it works with type 2 but doesn’t work with type 1

According to the USDA, it probably does. But only for insulin resistant diabetics (type 2). It helps our insulin do its job better. Read more about it on the following webpage: http://www.geocities.com/seabulls69/Type_II_Diabetes.html

BTW, it also helps reduce cholesterol and triglycerides… something we all should pay attention to.

I have been trying it for some time now and measuring my blood sugar levels. I consumed a bowl of pulp from one medium-size mango of the alphonso variety, on one occasion with and on another without cinnamon powder added. I measured my sugar levels 2 hours after that. Without cinnamon powder, the reading was around 250 and with cinnamon powder it was 170! However, I cannot be sure of how effective it was, as I did not measure the blood sugar before consuming the mango pulp though I stuck to my regular diet before this for the whole day. I had this pulp, on both occasions, in the evening.
Therefore, I think, cinnamon may help cut down blood sugar but only if the loss in control is up to a limit. You cannot expect much relief if you have gone way beyond the limit.
