Just wondering if they can.

* While moderate amounts of alcohol can cause blood sugar to rise, excess alcohol can actually decrease your blood sugar level — sometimes causing it to drop into dangerous levels.
* Beer and sweet wine contain carbohydrates and may raise blood sugar.
* Alcohol stimulates your appetite, which can cause you to overeat and may affect your blood sugar control.
* Alcohol can interfere with the positive effects of oral diabetes medicines or insulin.
* Alcohol may increase triglyceride levels.
* Alcohol may increase blood pressure.
* Alcohol can cause flushing, nausea, increased heart rate, and slurred speech.

most beers, wines and liquors contain HIGH amounts of sugar and carbs. most doctors (like mine) recommend if your going to drink, make sure your sugar is controlled at a good level and u drink a low carb drink i.e. michelob ultra. there are other beers that are specifically targeted for diabetics also.

Contrary to popular belief, the liver creates most cholesterol and only a small percentage is acquired through food. However, the more saturated fat a person eats, the more cholesterol his or her body makes.

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance that forms a part of each cell in your body. A persons body needs cholesterol for daily functions, such as making hormones, producing healthy cell walls and making vitamin D. It also produces bile acids that help in digestion.

Although this waxy substance helps your body in a number of ways, excess production of cholesterol can also be risky to your body and to your heart. When this happens, the extra cholesterol spills out and circulates into your bloodstream. Be aware that excessive levels of cholesterol in a persons blood can causes clogging of blood vessels, while elevating the risk of stroke and heart disease.

Food Based Cholesterol

Cholesterol comes from animal-based foods like dairy products, eggs and meat. The two types of cholesterol are low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL is the bad cholesterol that usually cause the clogging of blood vessels, while HDL is the good cholesterol that is responsible for clearing LDL out of your bloodstream, reducing the risks of heart disease.

The Connection Between Fat and Cholesterol

Saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are the three types of fats found in food. Each type of dietary fat affects a persons blood cholesterol in different ways.

Saturated fats are those found in lamb, pork, beef and other red meat products. Excessive saturated fats in the body can be dangerous to your health because the more saturated fats you eat, the more cholesterol your body produces, which eventually will end up in your bloodstream. Consuming too much saturated fat in the diet is the main cause of excess cholesterol levels in the blood.

Monounsaturated fats are those found in plant oils, such as canola, peanut and olive. Polyunsaturated fats, such as omega-3 fatty acid, can help to slow down blood clot formation and fight heart disease. They are found in fishes and plant oils, such as soybean, corn, safflower and sunflower.

Eating any fat will contribute to weight gain, but in lowering blood cholesterol, substituting saturated fats with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats will help get rid of newly formed cholesterol in the body. For this reason, people with elevated levels of blood cholesterol need to improve their eating habits to ensure that the right kind of fat enters their bodies.

Bad Cholesterol Can Cause Death Later In Life

In our junk food society we are on the brink of complete disaster because of unhealthy eating. More children today are considered obese and this is a direct result of the eating habits taught to them at an early age. Bad cholesterol rates are rising among the youth of today. We are even seeing cases of coronary heart disease in people in their early 30’s. This must be because the foods we are eating today have high levels of LDL cholesterol and saturated fat.

There are two things you should do to prevent the build up of bad cholesterol in your body: Change your diet, and exercise daily.

So what types of food are good for lowering cholesterol levels in the blood? Foods high in antioxidants and fiber are the types of foods you should be looking for. These include fruit and vegetables, whole grains and similar things. Stay away from foods that are considered fatty. Remember to eat mono- and polyunsaturated fats if you eat fat at all. Most fast food restaurants cook their meals using an alarming amount of oil. Yes I know, it does taste great, but so do bananas, grapes and pears. Maybe next time you having a craving for a nice juicy hamburger, why not go down to the local farmer’s market instead and pick out a new exotic fruit that you have never tried before. You might be surprised!

To find out if you have a excessive level of bad cholesterol in your blood, you should make an appointment with your doctor to be tested. It only takes a couple of minutes and you never know, it might save your life!

As a nation, if we are ever going to get out of our fast food, sugar loving mindset, we need to start with our children. Some schools today who are putting in place new healthier menus in their cafeterias. Is there more that could be done though? Children learn from watching adults, so starting to develop good eating habits will be good for you and your children.

Perhaps the ideal place to start is with the parents and guardians who need to set the example for their kids. There are any number of families out there who practically live off French fries and hamburgers. If those families could reduce the number of times they visit a fast food restaurant by one time in a week, then we will go a long way to reduce the rapidly escalating rate of bad cholesterol in the people of our country.

the cinnamon in the cereal wont counteract the sugar…yes, it is true that it has a healthy effect on your bloodsugar, but it does NOT have the power to counteract ANY sugar that you eat. let alone the fact that CTC cereal has TONS of sugar in it. Cinnamon is good for you….but it isnt magic. that would be about as effective as drinking a diet coke to counteract the double cheeseburger you just ate…lol!

Serum cholesterol 251mg/dl triglycerides 229 mg/dl HDL 55 mg/dl LDL 151 mg/dl VLDL 45 mg/dl
Blood sugar 96 mg/dl (Fasting)
Uric acid 5mg/dl

Watch your medications.

Certain medications can elevate uric acid levels. This is particularly true of diuretics used to treat high blood pressure and some types of heart disease. Talk to your doctor about your medications and make sure they’re not making the problem worse.

Step 3Watch what and how much you drink.

If you have high uric acid levels, it’s important to stay well hydrated by drinking lots of water. This not only helps dilute the uric acid in your bloodstream, but also helps the kidney eliminate it. Instead of drinking water only when you’re thirsty, make a conscious effort to drink at least eight glasses per day. It’s also important to avoid alcohol since it can raise the level of uric acid in your bloodstream and make it more likely that you’ll experience an acute gout attack. Unfortunately, if you’re headed to a party, you may want to drink the punch instead of the beer or wine since even light consumption of alcohol, particularly beer, has been shown to elevate uric acid concentrations in the blood.

Step 4Watch what you eat.

Uric acid is a breakdown product of purines which can be formed by the body or taken in through your diet. To reduce uric acid blood levels, it’s important to avoid foods that are high in purines. Your doctor should be able to give you a complete list of foods to avoid if your uric acid level is high. Foods that are particularly high in purines that should be avoided include organ meats, certain types of seafood, lentils, and even certain vegetables such as cauliflower and mushrooms. Most green leafy vegetables and fruits are low in purines and shouldn’t raise your uric acid blood levels. Dairy products such as low fat milk may also help to lower uric acid. Be sure to get lots of vitamin C in your diet since studies have shown it helps to increase excretion of uric acid by the kidneys.

Step 5Lose those excess pounds.

Weight loss can also help to lower uric acid blood levels, although it should be slow and gradual. Rapid weight loss can actually have the opposite effect and cause uric acid levels to rise. When trying to lose weight, stay away from low-carb diets as there’s some evidence that they can increase uric acid levels.

Step 6If these natural ways of lowering uric acid blood levels fail to work, talk to your doctor. It’s important to reduce high uric acid levels not only to reduce your risk of gout, but to decrease your risk of heart attack and stroke. A new study suggests that high uric acid levels may be associated with an elevated risk of both of these diseases as well as a higher rate of mortality. Don’t take any chances with your health!

Now to lower glucose and cholesterol. The Answer is EXERCISE> at least 1 hour a day. Both will come down. You may become diabetic within 10 years. Maybe . Depends on you . Also use the glycemic index diet :http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm

Good luck

In this article I’ll be exploring the use of garlic for health. Nicknamed the ‘stinking rose’, this auspicious herb has been revered throughout history as a cure and natural treatment for all manor of conditions. These include mosquito bites, wounds, heart disease, measles, tumors, snake bites, acne, colds, flu and even vampires!

Garlic’s health benefits are substantiated by a wealth of modern day research that confirms its anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is also a powerful antioxidant and immune booster with anti-inflammatroy properties. Scientific studies reveal benefits for diabetes, cancer and heart disease. It’s heart health traits include lowering bad cholesterol and blood pressure, aiding circulation and preventing against stroke.

Garlic’s might is largely due to the sulfur compounds it contains, such as allicin. Garlic also houses vitamin C, B6, selenium, magnesium, potassium, calcium and manganese and flavonoids.

The sulphur compound allicin provides not only many of the notable benefits of garlic, but also its notorious odour. Allicin is formed during the chemistry of chopping, crushing and chewing garlic, the more thorough the milling, the more allicin is created. Allicin has antibiotic, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties, and the reason why garlic has been used for skin infections such as Athletes’s foot, herpes and warts, digestive and lung infections such as diarrhea, coughs and colds, and Candida yeast and other microbes.

Allicin begins to degrade once produced and on cooking, so eating garlic raw and soon after chopping ensures the assimilation of optimum levels of this compound.

Garlic also contains diallyl sulphides, which, whilst not anti-fungal like allicin, are reportedly good for the blood and circulation, lowering bad cholesterol and boosting the immune system.

Rats that were put on a diet featuring both allicin and diallyl sulphides had a substantial increase in their levels of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione-S-transferase. This mighty enzyme produced within the body is incredibly important in helping to rid the body of toxins, drugs and carcinogens. Increasing levels of this and other phase II enzymes may be one way garlic helps to prevent against cancer, enhancing the elimination of potential carcinogens from the body. This also makes garlic great for a natural body detox.

Garlic as Anti-Inflammatory

The sulfur compounds in garlic have been found to have anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the activity of inflammatory enzymes. Along with vitamin C this can make garlic a protection against the pain associated with arthritis and asthma attacks.

Garlic for the Heart

garlic is renowned for its abilities to lower cholesterol and blood pressure naturally and protect against heart disease and stroke. Garlic has also been found to stimulate the production of nitric oxide in blood vessels aiding their dilation, and assist the body’s ability to dissolve blood clots (fibrinolyisis).

The antioxidant properties of garlic can also protect against cardiovascular disease by inhibiting the oxidation of bad cholesterol which would otherwise build up in artery walls. Further, folate in garlic is known to protect the cardiovascular system.

Garlic for Cancer Prevention

Population studies have revealed that eating garlic regularly, along with other alliums such as onions chives and scallions, reduces the risk of oesophageal, colon and stomach cancer. This may be due to garlic’s ability to reduce the formation of carcinogenic compounds. Garlic’s sulfur compounds such as allicin and ajeone have been found to stop the growth of various cancers in animal laboratory studies, including skin, stomach, colon, breast and oral cancer. Garlic also contains the powerful antioxidant mineral selenium, known for its anti-cancer properties.

Garlic for Diabetes

Some of the damage that can result from the degenerative effects of diabetes such as diseases of the kidney, retina and nervous system, may be deterred by garlic. Rats that were given a drug that would induce similar diabetic-effects in the body, namely an increase in blood sugar, cholesterol and damaged fats and a reduction in the body’s antioxidants, experienced fewer negative effects from the drug and an increase in antioxidant levels when given a daily dose of garlic oil.

Research then, has indicated garlic health benefits against bacteria, fungi and viruses, inflammation (as with arthritis), cancer, diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol levels.

Garlic – Natural Cure for Common Ailments

Garlic is an all round disease-preventive, and can be used as a natural treatment cure for common ailments such as acne, colds and flu, herpes and wrinkles due to its natural antioxidant and anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. Crush a clove or two of garlic into warm water and drink twice a day though be careful on an empty stomach if you are sensitive to garlic. This also serves as a natural body detox. If your skin is not over sensitive to garlic it can also be applied directly to acne spots or herpes. I find it very effective as a cure for oral herpes (cold-sores). If you have high cholesterol level, use garlic regularly in you’re your food as this will lower your cholesterol level naturally.(obviously along with avoiding a high cholesterol diet).

To summarise…

Garlic Benefits

• Garlic boosts your immune system.

• Garlic is anti-aging, its antioxidant power neutralizing free radicals that procure aging and disease.

• Garlic helps reduce plaque build up (atherosclerotic heart disease).

• Garlic thins the blood and helps to prevent blood clots (fibrinolyisis) hence reducing the risk of strokes.

• Garlic helps to prevent cancer, particularly of the digestive system, and reduces the size and arrests the growth of certain tumors.

• Garlic lowers and regulates blood sugar levels.

• Garlic helps to remove heavy metals such as lead and mercury from the body – natural body detoxification.

• Garlic is anti-inflammatory.

• Garlic (raw, containing allicin) is a natural antibiotic and can kill even drug resistant strains of bacteria such as MRSA as well as Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium known to cause stomach ulcers and implicated in stomach cancer.

• Garlic is anti-fungal and reduces yeast infections in body parts.

I’ve been cutting out on sugar here recently. Not that anything is wrong, just trying to keep my sugar blood level low. I’ve had diabetics in the family, so for health reasons I am sugar conscious of what I eat. Anyway, can lowering your sugar level improve your overall health, and sports performance too?

Yes it can. Too much sugar can cause you to have a burst of energy, but then within the hour you crash and feel tired and sluggish. Also Diabetes can develop when you eat too much of it. To get the most out sports and overall health, stick to complex carbs, like things made out of whole grains. They will give you lots of energy over a longer period of time, and keep your blood sugar level.

corn starch is used as a thickening agent.. like soups, gravies, and other liquid foods. an example of this is the difference between a soup and a stew… since stews are usually thicker liquid you add corn starch. to make gravy you take the pan casting from your meet (beef juice, turkey juice ) and add corn starch to thicken the liquid, a little water and there you go its all gravy. corn starch is not a sugar.

you are probably thinking of High-fructose corn syrup which is a sugar.

I checked my blood sugar and it was 390 (yes, I ate a candy bar), so I exercised for 10 min, and checked it again. The second time it was 136. Does exercise really work that fast in lowering your blood sugar level, or is there something wrong with my machine?

Just for the record, I do very well in controlling my eating habits, but today I did blow it.
Brady…. What are you talking about? My question had nothing to do with losing weight. I’m asking about exercise, and how fast it lowers your blood sugar level.

it doesn’t work that instantaneously. for most people exercise makes the glucose level go up a bit as Gary says, but not too much. I am allergic to any exercise that isn’t fun. so gym things are totally out and track things as well. I much prefer dancing or just plain walking as fast as I can. and no 10 minutes at a time either. I walk an hour every day as fast as I can.

My endo said that a "cheat treat" occasionally won’t hurt anything. It keeps us from getting the cravings for a food that we don’t usually get to have. He said for instance if I go to a grandchild’s birthday party it is ok to have the cake and ice cream, but try to have only a half serving. and to be sure to cut some grams of carb from the meal preceeding the party or "cheat treat" to compensate for the number I would be having.

It might have been a bad strip. Any time I get an off the wall reading, I do another to make sure. One candy bar shouldn’t have shot you up quite that high.

Diabetes has been treated with plant medicines for centuries. Recent scientific investigation has confirmed the effectiveness of many of these preparations, some of which are remarkably effective. Only those herbs and plants that appear most effective are relatively non-toxic and have substantial documentation of value are listed in this article.

Your diabetes natural treatments list.

Gymnema Sylvestre

Gymnema assists the pancreas in the production of insulin in Type 2 diabetes. Making this herb an effective diabetes natural treatment. Gymnema also improves the ability of insulin to lower blood sugar in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. It decreases cravings for sweet. This herb can be an excellent substitute for oral blood sugar-lowering drugs in Type 2 diabetes. Some people take 500 mg per day of gymnema extract.

Fenugreek – This herb has a certain ring to it’s name.

It’s the fenugreek seeds that make the difference when it comes to using this herb as a diabetes natural treatment. The defatted sections of the seed that contain the alkaloid trogonelline, nicotinic acid and coumarin is what makes this an effective diabetes natural treatment.

Frick and Frack – Onion and Garlic

Onion and garlic have significant blood sugar lowering action. The principal active ingredients are believed to be allyl propyl disulphide (APDS) and diallyl disulphide oxide (allicin), although other constituents such as flavonoids may play a role as well.

Experimental and clinical evidence suggests that APDS lowers glucose levels by competing with insulin for insulin-inactivating sites in the liver. This results in an increase of free insulin. APDS administered in doses of 125 mg/ kg to fasting humans was found to cause a marked fall in blood glucose levels and an increase in serum insulin. Allicin doses of 100 mg/kg produced a similar effect.

Pterocarpus Marsupium – That’s easy for you to say.

The tree is the source of the Kino of the European pharmacopeas. The gum-resin looks like dried blood (Dragon’s blood), much used in Indian medicine. This herb has a long history of use in India as a natural treatment for diabetes. The flavonoid, (-)-epicatechin, extracted from the bark of this plant has been shown to prevent alloxan-induced beta cell damage in rats. Both epicatechin and a crude alcohol extract of Pterocarpus marsupium have actually been shown to regenerate functional pancreatic beta cells. No other drug or natural agent has proven to generate this action. That is what separates this herb from most of the other diabetes natural treatments.

Blueberry leaves

Blueberry anthocyanosides increases capillary reliability, inhibits free-radical damage and enhances the quality of the vascular system. In Europe, it is used as an anti-haemorrhagic agent in the handling of eye diseases including diabetic retinopathy. I heard for a long time how good blueberries are. As a diabetes natural treatment this herb makes all the sense in the world to me.

Asian ginseng

In traditional Chinese medicine Asian ginseng is regularly used as a natural diabetes treatment. The evidence has been that it enhances the release of insulin from the pancreas and also increases the number of insulin receptors. A current analysis showed that 200 mg of ginseng extract per day improved on blood sugar control as well as energy levels in Type 2 diabetes (NIDDM).

Bilberry

Bilberry may lower the risk of some diabetic complications, such as diabetic cataracts and retinopathy.

Cinnamon – Triples insulin’s efficiency

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba extract may prove useful for prevention and treatment of early-stage diabetic neuropathy.

The benefits of using diabetes natural treatments compared to ingesting drugs are many. They are safer, and get to the problem without the side effects that quite often accompany medications. You may have to experiment with these alternative remedies to find the one that is best for you. Is that a responsible way to better health? I think so.

You have been given a list of at least seven diabetes natural treatments. Use them well. I was able to reduce blood sugar levels in my body using fenugreek and gymnema sylvestre. I wish you luck with your choice.

Im not diabetic, but i can see if i keep eating this way, i will very very soon become diabetic……

so what is best for keeping a low blood sugar?

I want scientific studies confirming your answers please……

Would you be surprised to learn that the answer is pretty much the same for both conditions? I like videos as a learning method, so I’ll suggest a couple that I think are excellent.

Dr Richard Johnson, University of Colorado, talks about his study linking high uric acid to high blood pressure. The dietary links are fructose, red meat and alcohol, and other high purine foods such as beans and lintals.
He found a direct correlation between uric acid concentration and blood pressure.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjG5t4LN0jA&feature=player_embedded

Dr Robert Ludsig, University of California at San Francisco, has an excellent video discussing what he calls the epidemic of obesity, fatty liver disease and diabetes. He blames the dramatic increase in sugar consumption over the past thirty years, or so. He shows how the liver metabolizes fructose and alcohol exactly the same, with an end product of uric acid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

At the University of California at Davis Researchers put 16 volunteers on a controlled diet, supplemented with either fructose (derived from corn) or glucose. After 10 weeks, both groups of participants had gained equal amounts of weight. Participants in the fructose group, however, showed an increase of fat cells around major organs including their hearts and livers, and also underwent metabolic changes that are precursors to heart disease and diabetes.

"This is the first evidence we have that fructose increases diabetes and heart disease independently from causing simple weight gain," lead researcher Kimber Stanhope said. "We didn’t see any of these changes in the people eating glucose."
