Blood sugar is regulated by two pancreatic hormones, namely insulin and glucagon. When blood sugar rises, ?2

insulin is released; it binds to receptors and, through signal transduction, results in an increase in glucose uptake by cells, effectively lowering blood glucose. When blood sugar decreases, glucagon is released, binds to cell receptors, and causes glucose to be released into circulation. Diabetes mellitus is a disorder that results from excessively high levels of blood glucose. Type II diabetics have normal to elevated levels of insulin. What, then, might be causing the elevated blood glucose levels?

The elevated glucose level is caused by the inability of the cells to "take in " the glucose and use it for energy. The glucose continues to circulate in the blood. It is more a problem with the receptivity of the cells that with hormone imbalances.

The Myth About Sugar Free Foods0

If you suffer from Diabetes then you know that keeping track of the sugar in foods you consume is critical to your health. It is a daily process of controlling blood sugar levels. There are many processed snacks such as cookies, soda, and chewing gum that you want to eat, but are unable to due to your diabetes. Many food companies have created sugar free foods as a substitute for people with diabetes. If you think that these sugar free foods will have no effect on your blood sugar level then think again!

The alarming news is that sugar free foods may have the same effect as sugar foods. How can this be true? Food manufacturers use sugar alcohol instead of sugar in an attempt to minimize the effect of the food on your blood sugar level. Sugar alcohol is a sugar substitute that has roughly 50% fewer calories than regular sugar. Sugar alcohols are derived from natural foods including fruits.

Sugar alcohols help lower blood sugar levels because they are converted to glucose at a much slower rate. Therefore, they don’t cause a spike in your blood sugar level like sugar. Plus, sugar alcohols can be metabolized with very little insulin, if any at all.

Many people with diabetes are often confused by the sugar free labeling on processed foods. They automatically assume that they can eat this food because it won’t affect their blood sugar level. They do not understand that sugar free means that the product has sugar alcohols and is still a significant source of carbohydrates. Therefore, if they consume this product they will have trouble lowering their blood sugar levels.

Another negative side effect of sugar free foods is that you can experience bloating and diarrhea as sugar alcohols can mimic the effects of laxatives. These negative effects are amplified when you over indulge in these sugar free foods.

The key is to be able to read the food labels on the sugar free food products. The food label contains valuable information that diabetes sufferers need to examine to help control their blood sugar levels. The food label will list Nutrition Facts. First, it is critical to note the serving size. Serving sizes can differ and if you only focus on the calories, fat, etc. you may have a false perception of the food.

The key areas to examine are the Total Carbohydrate and sugar alcohols as these have the most profound effect on your blood sugar levels. Sugar free foods will list the sugar alcohols used. Examples of sugar alcohols include: sorbitol, mannitol, isomalt, xylitol, lactitol, and hydrogenated starch hydrolysates. A free food is one that has fewer than 20 calories and 5 grams of carbohydrate. Check to see if the food fits these guidelines to help you determine how it will affect your blood sugar level and how much you should consume.

Essentially every person with diabetes should realize that sugar free foods may have a similar effect on their blood sugar levels as that of sugar foods. Be informed and read the food labels to ensure that you are controlling your blood sugar levels.

Is it true that cinnamon lowers blood sugar for diabetics?17

I thought not but my crazy cousin insists that it lowers blood sugar. Thanks!

Diabetes treatment: Can cinnamon lower blood sugar?

Is it true that cinnamon can lower blood sugar in people with diabetes?

Mayo Clinic endocrinologist Maria Collazo-Clavell, M.D., and colleagues answer select questions from readers.
Answer
This is a topic of debate. While some research suggests that cinnamon enhances the effectiveness of insulin, resulting in lower blood sugar levels, other research contradicts this conclusion.

A 2006 study found that cinnamon extract has a moderate effect in reducing blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. However, another study published in 2006 concluded that cinnamon supplements don’t improve blood sugar control in postmenopausal women.

More research would be needed to determine what role cinnamon may play in the treatment of diabetes.

Does wine really lower your blood sugar?9

I asked a while ago but never really understood so I’m back at it.

Is the reason you are told to limit alcohol with Glucophage (metaphormin) really that your sugar might drop too low because wine lowers the blood sugar?
Wow! You guys are all so smart. :-)

The reason I ask is that I do enjoy wine but avoid it. Don’t avoid much else unfortunately :-( I’m asking now tho cuz I plan, God willing, to take a trip to Paris and I refuse to go there and not drink wine. I think it’s illegal or something. I might get arrested.

No, that’s not quite it..

Metformin works to enhance the body’s use of insulin.. allowing it to take sugar out of the blood, and returning it to a normal level. Alcohol actually increases the effectiveness of metformin, so it’s like taking extra pills. Not good, because metformin starts working overtime, REALLY enhancing the insulin uptake, and dropping the blood sugar too much.

And for other answers.. wine has virtually no sugar in it, it’s all turned to alcohol (atkins anyone? – I dont recomment that by the way). Also, the drop in blood sugar after alcohol consumption only happens for people with tendencies for hypoglycemia, not a worry for anyone on metformin.

Is it true that even moderate weight loss lowers blood sugar significantly?2

My cousin went for a checkup cause she wasn’t feeling well and she found out her blood sugar was 181. The doc just told her to drop a few pounds and watch the amount of sugar she eats. He didin’t put her on medication which sort of suprised me. Isn’t a 181 blood sugar level a cause for medicine or not?

Yes, exercise can lower your blood sugar. It helps to increase your metabolism and for you to lose body fat. When your body cannot use insulin properly, you store sugars as fats. Less fat=Lower sugar.
Lower sugar foods will also help her sugar to stay low. It doesnt mean she cannot eat cake/ice cream/candy etc, just enjoy in moderation. Have a small piece, or a small scoop of ice cream. Starchy foods also. Such as potatoes, corn, bread.
Her doctor may be monitoring her sugar before putting her on medication. He may want to do more blood work before deciding to put her on medication. It also depends a lot on someones HBA1c. It monitors the glucose levels in your plasma. A level of 7 or below is ok. If its very high, it means that the person has poor glucose control (poor insulin function). After they determine the other blood work results, they may decide to do start on medications. Most of the time, they want you to watch your diet and exercise before starting on medicines.

Does protein control blood sugar levels?4

Fish has protein and I was wondering if it lowers blood sugar if I take more protein foods with my normal meals

Ok, here is the jaz on nutrition and how it affects your daily bg levels.

1. Simple carbohydrates = Sugars and anything else that is easily broken down and absorbed. chocolate, powdered sugar, all candies, cokes, and juices. These contain a sugar called dextrose or some other type of fast absorbing sugar. They can cause a quick spike in your blood sugar and cause problems.

2. Complex Carbohydrates/Proteins = Breads, Pastas, starches in potatoes, steaks are a great source of protein and so is beef jerky. These are absorbed slowly into your blood stream causing a slower and longer rise in blood sugar over time.

Here is what can happen.

It is what i like to call Primary Spike / Secondary Spike.

Your simple carbs are absorbed first and boom there is your first fast hard hitting spike that will affect you adversely, you will more than likely feel that one in like fifteen to thirty minutes depending on the intensity of the spike. Then when that spike has concluded, enough time has elapsed for your slow steady spike to begin…BOOM SECONDARY SPIKE! You see? Protein doesn’t control your bg levels nor do high glycemic index foods. They just delay the inevitable. You will spike regardless.

Granted there are foods that you do eat that will spike your bg less. Wheat, whole grains, fish…etc. You can control your bg better by ingesting healthier foods. I have always suggested that any diabetic become a semi vegetarian in the manner that you should eat 75% more vegetables relative to a normal human being and then eat 25% of what you normally ingested before you were diagnosed as a diabetic. In this way you will have more of what won’t hurt you and less of what will. A good way to do this is to cover 75% of your plate with vegetables then take the other 25% and put whatever you want on it.

Remember though, no food is 100% safe when you are diabetic. All foods technically become your worst enemy so watch what you eat and monitor your bg levels to see what spikes are the worst and at what times its at its worst.

Primary w/ Secondary spikes are killer on the system.

But there is something else you should know. Just because you are diabetic doesn’t mean that you can’t just splurge every now and again. Don’t allow anyone to tell you otherwise. Yes it’s dangerous, yes it may agitate your condition. But who cares for one day out of the month? Select a day out of the month and eat whatever you want that day only and it will help you take the edge off the arduous task of controlling your diabetes and help you keep your sanity.

Some Useful Vitamins That Lower Blood Sugar0

Certain vitamins and minerals have been found beneficial in lowering blood sugar and thus useful in the treatment of diabetes.

Vitamin B complex - Vitamins of the B group are valuable in the treatment of diabetes. Despite and adequate intake of these vitamins, diabetics often have abnormally small amounts of vitamin B in their blood because of high urinary loss of exhibit symptoms of vitamin B deficiency. Marked clinical improvement has been reported in patients of diabetes with only 16000 units of daily supplements of vitamin B complex. Because these vitamins help reduce blood fat and cholesterol, they should be generously supplied at all times.

Thiamine or Vitamin B1 - Of the various vitamins of the B group, thiamine or vitamin B1 and pyridoxine or vitamin B6 is of special value in diabetes. Diabetic diet inadequate in vitamin B1, often leads to the development of neuritis, which is relieved as soon as large amounts of this vitamin are given. Vitamin B1 is said to be particularly valuable in preventing damage to the brain during diabetic acidosis. The greater the insulin requirement, the higher is the requirement for vitamin B1, pantothenic acid or vitamin B5 and biotin or vitamin B8.

The primary natural vegetable sources of thiamine are wheat germ, brewer’s yeast, the outer layers of rice, wheat and other whole grain cereals, pulses, nuts, peas, lime, legumes, dark green leafy vegetables, banana and apple. Those of pantothenic acid are wheat germ, whole grain bread, green vegetables and peanuts. Biotin is found in brewer’s yeast, rice bran, rice germ, rice polishing and peanut butter.

Pyridoxine or Vitamin B6 - When diet is inadequate in vitamin B6 or pyridoxine, and essential amino acid tryptophan, is converted into a substance known as xanthurenic acid. It has been shown in laboratory experiments that xanthurenic acid tends to damage the pancreatic tissue.

Diabetics who have been given 50 mg of vitamin B6 daily have shown a rapid and marked decrease in urinary xanthurenic acid. In one case, the quantity dropped almost 97 percent the first day. Total absence of urinary xanthurenic acid amongst those who continued with a daily dosage of 10 to 20 mg of this vitamin indicated that none was being formed in the body. Diabetics are thus greatly helped by a liberal intake of vitamin B6. The main natural sources of pyridoxine are milk, brewer’s yeast, cereals, legumes, green leafy vegetables and carrot.
