why can’t you cure diabetes (type 1)?5

the title says it all..why can’t you? can’t doctors inject something into your body that produces insulin correctly? or a transplant? or something?

(oh, please don’t say "they’ll never be a cure", you’ll just make me fell bad for myself..ugh, sorry if i sound like a brat)

In normally healthy people, insulin is produced by certain special cells. In diabetics, either those cells don’t produce enough insulin, or they don’t produce any insulin at all.

Transplants work…sort of. Usually diabetics don’t get transplants of just those insulin producing cells, because a transplant patient has to be on an even more regimented treatment plan than a diabetic. So if a diabetic needs a transplant of some other organ, s/he might very well get a transplant of those cells, as well, because s/he’ll have to take anti-rejection medicines and do all that other stuff anyway.

I think that there WILL be a cure. I have no idea when. I think that we should be doing a lot more research with stem cells.

anyone heard of any cure for type 1 diabetes (yeh aside from insulin)?5

any promising researches or possible soon to be cures?

Well you can get a full pancreatic transplant (which is normally done as well as a kidney transplant) or you can get an Islet Cell/Stem Cell transplant, but none of these are really mainstream as of yet. They all require drugs that would suppress the immune system so the organs/cells wouldn’t be rejected. In years to come they’re hoping to be able to cure it by the islet/stem cell transplant where the cells would be coated with Teflon or the like so the immune system couldn’t destroy them, but this is a few years away.

Hope I helped :)

Anyone you know have type 1 diabetes ?1

http://main.diabetes.org/site/TRC/StepOut/StepOut244648010?pg=peditor&fr_id=5355&px=4308388
You can donate to the cure and help sponsor me for my Step Out Walk:)

any suggestions on how i can raise more money, too ?
The walk is this saturday morning.
Oh, actually i started in august, thanks.
I personally have type 1 and know how difficult it is to live with something like this, and want to raise as much money as possible to find a cure so they can find a cure and this won’t be anything to interfere with one persons life.
Really, thanks for the support, though

For a walk that is this saturday it is almost too late to start fund-raisingg. This year for the Walk to Cure Diabetes in Kansas City our team held a cut-a-thon and raised $800, a carwash and raised $285, and partnered up with Bob Evans for a community night and raised $400. When it comes to fundraising you have to start early and get it out by word of mouth I have found works best.

Diabetes Cure Testing?7

i’ve had type 1 diabetes for 7 years.
i’ll do ANYTHING to get rid of it.
i’ve basically given up on it, i never check, and when i do it’s usually twice what it should be.
i dont do as many injections as i should. i just cant be bothered.
basically, my questions is that i know they’re testing Islet Cell transplants on adults, to cure their diabetes, or at least to help it, i meant someone who was being tested on once.
i was wondering, is it possilbe to put myself forward as someone who is willing to give this a try, or be experimented on.
im13, but im sure that once they test it on adults, they’ll have to test it on kids to see if it works on them, how would i put myslef forward for it?

Until a cure is found you need to research the affects of long term uncontrolled diabetes. Do you really want to go blind or lose limbs? I KNOW it’s hard to live with. I live with it too. But if you care at all about your future, take care of yourself NOW, before there is a ‘cure’. You can live a long, healthy and active life if you simply take care of yourself.

I have a new BF who has Type 1 Diabetes. When his sugar gets low he sleepwalks. Is there any way to prevent it?11

We have only been dating for 1 month but I am starting to fall in love with him. However, he has not been managing the disease well and went into a coma once and recently I was told had convulsions when his BG dropped to 18. He recently was hospitalized and is being treated by a specialist for this. I believe he will be getting the insulin pump in about a week.

One night I did an overnight and it was very scarey for me. He turned into a different person in the middle of the night and called me bad names. I posted before on this forum about this. It frightened me terribly and I ended up leaving the hotel and police and paramedics came.

I am now happy that he getting the medical care he needs and will be getting the pump. He also mentioned something about a new kind of insulin – NPH – that is longer lasting.

on resaerching all this for weeks, I believe what happens to him at night is called Nocturnal Hypoglycemia. It was night sweats, night terrors, and sleep walking. This experience was so traumatic for me I am afraid to ever do an overnight again. Of course this hurts him terribly and it hurts me.

It is early enough in the relationship where I can walk if I have to. I am just hoping there is some way to avoid leaving him. I am trying to figure out if there is anyway to guarantee this sleep walking will not recur. I know the pump should significantly reduce the chances of reoccurence, but everything I read sounds like there is no cure for this.

As he is a former marine (got diabetes in the marine corp) for those wondering, and also has an abusive childhood, I worry that the low blood sugar and sleep walking could cause combative or even violent episodes. He is a wonderful guy the rest of the time, it’s just these overnights i dread. Without overnights we have no future.

I am very sad for him and for myself as this might mean he will ever have a normal relationship or get married. He is a very big guy 6′3, 230 lbs, and if he gets combative in his sleep it is terrifying to me.

Is there anything I am overlooking? Is there anyway this can work out. I read about some alarms that can attached to the wrist at night that will ring if blood sugar drops. Would that be a solution?

Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks so much everyone.

Tell him to knock it off. Diabetes is not an excuse for everything

do u know about the new way for cure of diabetes type 1 for children has 7 years old?4

i looking for definite cure, not about control of diabeted type 1. please informe me for any vaccine or drug for definite cure. thankf

At this time, there IS NO DEFINITE CURE.

But on the horizon are some new possibilities that are STILL in the animal testing stages.

The first uses adult stem cells to regrow the Islet Cells in your pancreas that produce insulin. This has worked IN MICE — but is a LONG way from being given to humans. IF this proves effective in HUMANS, then a commercial treatment is still 15-20 years away.

A Pancreas Transplant is a possibility, but is very very dangerous. Pancreas Transplant is the least effective of all the transplanted organ. Heart transplants easily live 10-15 years longer. Kidney transplants live 15-30 years longer.

But pancreas transplant live only 5-7 years longer. In fact, more than 50% of the patients are dead within 5 years. Therefore, most doctors will NOT do a pancreas transplant unless the patient is going to die anyway. In this case, even a couple of years longer is better than nothing.

But Type 1 Diabetes in a 7-year-old is EASILY treatable with insulin, diet, and exercise. NO doctor would recommend a transplant to an otherwise healthy patient!

There are some other possibilities, but they are are even more unsure, and have MANY years of experiment to go through before humans can be involved.

In the mean time, the 7-year-old needs to learn what CAN and CANNOT be eaten, and that the medication are KEEPING HER ALIVE, and without them shot she WILL die.

Type 1 diabetes,,,,,?5

I have a friend who I met in Iraq. He was my CO and well recently he discovered that his kid has type one diabetes. My question is that is anyone coming close to a cure for this and how long is it going to take?

There is some potentially promising research being done on Type 1 diabetes.

As you may already know, Type 1 diabetes is the result of destruction and/or impairment of the insulin-producing beta islet cells of the pancreas.

Stem cells are cells that have yet to differentiate. That is, they have not decided what kind of cells they are going to be. Someday, it may be possible to transplant some of these stem cells into a Type 1 diabetic and allow their pancreas to begin producing insulin again.

Of course, this research is in the theoretical stage. It will most likely be many years before this type of therapy will be available for patients.

Unfortunately, the Bush administration pretty much slammed the door on stem cell research. However, Obama has lifted the ban and research can begin again. But we lost critical years where progress could have been made.

Someday, Type 1 diabetes may be curable. For now, the only option is management with insulin and diet.

Hope this helps.

Type 1 Diabetes Car Magnet.?5

I want to get a car magnet (for my car obviously) so that if I’m driving like I’m drunk they know that I’m diabetic. However, I don’t really want one that’s all for the cure thing. Yeah I want a cure but I just want one that basically says "I am type 1 diabetic". But I can’t find one.

I really don’t think you should be driving if you’re drunk. So all in all this defeats the purpose. ——————–

Cure for Diabetes ?7

Ok’ this has been bugging me for a long time (well since I came down with type 1 diabetes 2 year’s ago) why is it that I will hear that there is a cure time to time for type 1 or type 2 diabetes, then I don’t hear nothing on that topic for a long time .Well I’m going to tell you all my feeling on this and please let me know your’s as well. I personally think that (FDA) has something to do with this… There is 29 mil people now in the unidted states with diabetis, think of how much money just on meds that is for the FDA, pharmaceutical, endocrinologist, educators, and other diabetic medical fields.WOW I know my meds alone cost 500 – 800 a month that’s not including doctors and blab la bla..Sorry I guess I’m just venting the truth.

My feelings are that there is way to much money being made off of diabetes and other diseases and you are not going to see a cure, even if they really find one. They keep dangling the carrot in front of us, but I doubt if we will ever get one. They just tell you about a cure "in the working" every now and then so we think they are still looking for one

Texande2002 ….you are so wrong. Even if you control type 2 with diet and exercise (which many people do) you still have the disease. And usually later in life you have to take meds again. You should go to some educational classes and learn the truth.
